Maverick’s: The Story of Big-Wave Surfing
Text by Matt Warshaw. Foreword by Daniel Duane.
The world class surf break that is known as Maverick’s is near the quiet Northern California coastal town of Half Moon Bay. Here, amid the deadly rocks and currents and outrageous waves, the history of big wave surfing is being written.

“Maverick‘s” makes use of Matt Warshaw’s extraordinary access to vintage and contemporary surf pictures. In addition, photographer David Perry, whose work has already beren showcased in “Hot Rod” and “Bordertown”, was hired to shoot portraits of the colorful Maverick’s personalities, as well as atmospheric images of the coastal environment.

Because I didn’t have a surfing background and hadn’t been immersed in the surf world I wasn’t prone to use typical cropping or typical combinations of images. This proved useful in giving the book a distinctive look, and allowed me to highlight the relationship between human skill and environmental power.

The was the first book I designed as it was being written. Warshaw and I worked in tandem—I would show him the design for one chapter as he was delivering the manuscript for the next.
